Switch Port Specialist Believes Switch 2 Can Surpass Its Predecessor's Success

The Nintendo Switch's impact on the gaming landscape is undeniable. One company that played a significant role in its success was Virtuos, the renowned port specialist behind bringing titles like Dark Souls and The Outer Worlds to the hybrid console. Now, as anticipation builds for the Switch 2, Virtuos is already expressing strong confidence in its potential.

Eoin O'Grady, the technical director of Virtuos' subsidiary Black Shamrock (known for Starlink: Battle for Atlas), recently shared his optimistic outlook with Wccftech. He believes the Switch 2 is poised to "surpass" the success of the original system. This bold prediction is rooted in the current boom in handheld gaming.

According to O'Grady, the rising popularity of handheld devices like the original Switch and Steam Deck is creating a fertile ground for the Switch 2. He envisions the console capitalizing on this "growing demand for gaming on the go" by offering a diverse library:

  • Indie Gems: Providing a platform for innovative and creative independent titles.
  • Nintendo Exclusives: Delivering the high-quality, beloved franchises that Nintendo is famous for.
  • AAA Blockbuster Titles: Bringing visually stunning and immersive experiences to the handheld space.

"Nintendo has a huge pool of loyal fans, but alongside that, the handheld gaming market is growing right now...so I think we will see the Switch 2 surpass its predecessor," O'Grady stated, highlighting the confluence of Nintendo's brand strength and the expanding market.

Alex Heise, Virtuos' North America director of business development, echoes this sentiment. He emphasizes that the "strong brand" and "proven success" of the original Switch, coupled with the simple yet powerful addition of a "2" to the name, instantly communicates the value proposition of the new device. This, he argues, sets it apart from some of Nintendo's less successful console transitions in the past.

Heise acknowledges that while no one could have "fully predicted" the original Switch's monumental success, Virtuos always held high expectations. The Switch 2, however, represents a more direct and intuitive evolution.

"The Switch 2 is the most iterative console Nintendo has launched in quite some time, dating back to the transition from NES to SNES. No Nintendo console ever had a '2' in its name," Heise explained.

Nintendo's initial sales figures for the Switch 2 are certainly promising. The company reported that the new hybrid hardware sold "over 3.5 million units worldwide" in its first four days. This remarkable performance also made it the "highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware" ever. As of March 31, 2025, the original Switch has sold more than 152 million units worldwide over eight years.

Beyond Virtuos, other third-party developers, including industry giants like CD Projekt Red (Cyberpunk 2077) and Capcom (Street Fighter 6), have also publicly expressed their support for the Switch 2.

The early signs point to a bright future for the Switch 2. With a growing handheld gaming market, a loyal fanbase, and the backing of key industry players, Nintendo's new console has the potential to not only meet but exceed the extraordinary success of its predecessor. Only time will tell if O'Grady's prediction comes true, but the optimism surrounding the Switch 2 is certainly palpable.
