Receiving the KVIFF President’s Award, Sarsgaard didn't shy away from expressing his concerns about the future of humanity, touching upon divisive politics, existential threats, and even Elon Musk's vision for Mars colonization.

During his acceptance speech, Sarsgaard highlighted the dangers of division, particularly within the United States. He emphasized the need for unity, stating: “The enemies are the forces that divide us. There is no going it alone." He lamented the country's retreat from global responsibilities and its internal fragmentation along political, gender, and racial lines.

Sarsgaard didn't mince words when addressing the looming threats of climate change and potential wars: "We're all going to die. Our children are all going to live on the same planet, and maybe Elon [Musk]'s will live on Mars. It doesn't look that nice to me." He expressed skepticism about Musk's Mars colonization plans as a viable solution for humanity's problems, suggesting that true connection and collaboration are the only way forward.

“We’re all fucked. So we have to connect. It’s very simple," Sarsgaard declared, underscoring his belief that collective action transcends political affiliations.

His concerns about technology and wealthy elites escaping Earth's problems surfaced again when discussing his role in the upcoming Apple TV+ series, Neuromancer. Sarsgaard plays a powerful AI creator who seeks refuge from a deteriorating Earth. This character, he explained, embodies the "Elon Musk-style" mentality of abandoning Earth for Mars. "There is no place to go!" Sarsgaard asserted, highlighting the interconnectedness of global challenges.

Sarsgaard also touched upon the trend of wealthy individuals building survivalist bunkers, particularly in places like New Zealand. He dismissed this as a futile effort, emphasizing that "There is no fucking place to be unless you have a nuclear arsenal to keep everyone else at bay!! There is no place to go. We're all in this together."

He shared that while he owns a remote property with its own water source, he doesn't believe it offers true protection from widespread catastrophe: "When it happens, there’s no place to be, because you think the world is going to stay in the desert, where there’s no water? Everyone’s going to go. They don’t care that you own the property."

Further emphasizing his concerns about disconnection, Sarsgaard referenced his 2023 warning about AI, urging the entertainment industry not to surrender human stories and connections "to the machines and the eight billionaires that own them."

He also discussed his participation in the "No Kings" protest on Donald Trump's birthday, an experience he shared with his 13-year-old daughter. He believes in a combination of socialism and democracy, aiming for equal opportunities for all.

Looking ahead, Sarsgaard is set to star in Erosion, a film by Swiss director Michael Koch, where he will portray a brain surgeon. He expressed excitement about the role, describing it as a significant journey for his character, and praised Koch's visual storytelling abilities.

While acknowledging his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal's exceptional directing talent, Sarsgaard hinted at the possibility of directing a film himself in the future. He also celebrated his recent and upcoming projects, including September 5, The Bride! (directed by Gyllenhaal), and Memory, for which he won the Volpi Cup for best actor at the 2023 Venice festival.

KVIFF organizers lauded Sarsgaard as an actor “renowned for his range and ability to access what is behind the often-complicated facades of the characters he plays.”
