Born in Australia, Julian McMahon, son of former Australian prime minister William McMahon, began his acting career on Australian television. He gained recognition in popular soap operas like The Power, the Passion, and Home and Away before transitioning to Hollywood in the mid-1990s.

His career highlights include:

• Leading role in NBC's crime drama Profiler (1996).
• Part of the main cast of the supernatural series Charmed.
• Co-starring role as plastic surgeon Christian Troy in Ryan Murphy's acclaimed FX show, Nip/Tuck, which aired for six seasons and 100 episodes.
