Breaking News
Bucks Waive Damian Lillard, Sign Myles Turner Away From Pacers
In a stunning turn of events, the Milwaukee Bucks have made a series of bold moves that have sent shockwaves through the league.
Milwaukee has waived Damian Lillard, stretching his remaining $113 million contract over five years. This results in a staggering $22.5 million of dead money on their salary cap annually – the largest stretch in NBA history. Lillard, now a free agent, is expected to miss the entire next season recovering from a torn Achilles.
But that's not all. The Bucks then used the freed-up cap space to sign Myles Turner away from the Indiana Pacers with a four-year, $107 million contract. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Pacers' fear of the luxury tax, exacerbated by Tyrese Haliburton’s injury, led to them losing a key player from their NBA Finals run.
"Turner, the longest-tenured Pacer, made it known he wished to remain in Indiana. Ultimately, Indiana’s aversion to the tax, which grew after Tyrese Haliburton’s injury, allowed Bucks to get the new franchise center," Charania tweeted.
This is a massive gamble for the Bucks, who are trying to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo happy. However, early reports suggest Giannis may be processing the situation like the rest of us – with a mix of surprise and uncertainty.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder Agree to Max Extension
The Oklahoma City Thunder are locking up their franchise player for the foreseeable future.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, fresh off leading the Thunder to their first NBA title and winning MVP, has agreed to a four-year, $285 million supermax contract extension. This is the richest contract in NBA history, averaging over $70 million per season. The extension adds four years to his existing two-year, $79.1 million deal, keeping him in OKC for six seasons. The final two years of the new contract will pay him over $70 million annually.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5 rebounds last season, shooting 37.5% from three. He also won the NBA scoring title, regular season MVP, and Finals MVP. He's a bonafide superstar.
The Thunder aren't done. Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are also extension-eligible and expected to receive max or near-max offers.
Bucks Round Out Roster After Blockbuster Moves
Following the dramatic moves involving Lillard and Turner, the Milwaukee Bucks made other adjustments to their roster:
- Traded Pat Connaughton and two second-round picks to Charlotte for Vasilije Micic. This is a cost-saving move, freeing up money to pay for players like Turner and Gary Trent Jr.
- Agreed to a deal to bring back center Jericho Sims. This is a minimum deal with a player option in the second year, providing depth behind Turner and Portis.
- Signed veteran wing Gary Harris on a two-year contract at the veteran minimum. He can provide solid minutes off the bench.
Dennis Schroder Signs with Kings for Three Years, $45 Million
The Sacramento Kings have found their point guard for the near future.
Dennis Schroder is signing with Sacramento for three years, $45 million. Schroder, traded to Detroit at the deadline, played well enough to earn this contract. He's a solid floor general, can defend, and showed his value in the playoffs with the Pistons. This is a fair price for his services.
Kings Trade Jonas Valanciunas to Nuggets for Dario Saric
The Denver Nuggets continue to improve their roster.
The Nuggets are trading Dario Saric to Sacramento for Jonas Valanciunas. Valanciunas will be the best backup center Nikola Jokic has ever had, and the two are friends. Saric played sparingly for the Nuggets last season.
The Kings save approximately $5 million this coming season and $10 million next season. Saric will have more opportunities in Sacramento.
Thunder Star Jalen Williams to Have Wrist Surgery
Oklahoma City Thunder star Jalen Williams will undergo wrist surgery.
Williams tore ligaments in his wrist in the 80th game of the season and played the entire postseason with the injury. He averaged 21.4 points and 5.5 rebounds during the championship run. He is expected to be healthy by the start of next season and is eligible for a contract extension this summer.
Gary Trent Jr. Returning to Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks are bringing back Gary Trent Jr.
Gary Trent Jr. is returning to the Bucks on a two-year, $7.5 million deal, with the second year a player option. Trent Jr. averaged 11.1 points a game for the Bucks and shot 41.6% from 3 last season. This is a steal for the Bucks.
Jordan Clarkson to Sign with New York Knicks
The New York Knicks are adding bench scoring.
Jordan Clarkson intends to sign with the New York Knicks after clearing waivers from his buyout with the Utah Jazz. This is likely a veteran minimum contract. Clarkson is a microwave scorer off the bench who averaged 16.2 points a game last season.
