Final Black Sabbath Concert Kicks Off with a Bang: A Heavy Metal Extravaganza

The atmosphere at Birmingham, England's Villa Park was electric on Saturday (July 5th) as the highly anticipated "Back to the Beginning" concert got underway. This all-day event, leading up to what promises to be an unforgettable final performance from the legendary Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, started with a series of electrifying mini-sets from some of the biggest names in metal.

The day began with a thunderous opening from Mastodon, who ignited the crowd with two of their signature tracks, “Black Tongue” and “Blood and Thunder.” But the true highlight of their set was undoubtedly their rendition of Sabbath’s “Supernaut,” a performance made even more special by the collaborative percussion featuring:

  • Brann Dailor (Mastodon's drummer) on lead vocals
  • Mario Duplantier of Gojira
  • Danny Carey from Tool
  • Eloy Casagrande of Slipknot

This unprecedented collaboration created a truly unique and memorable tribute to the metal gods.

Next up, Rival Sons delivered a powerful set, cleverly sandwiching a blistering cover of Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” between two of their original hits: “Do Your Worst” and "Secret". Their energy was palpable, leaving a lasting impression on the Birmingham crowd.

Anthrax kept the energy high, unleashing their classic anthem “Indians” and following it up with their take on Sabbath’s “Into the Void," showcasing their thrash metal prowess and respect for their influential predecessors.

Halestorm brought their signature blend of hard rock and metal to the stage, performing “Love Bites (So Do I)” and “Rain Your Blood on Me.” They also paid homage to Ozzy Osbourne with a spirited cover of his solo hit, “Perry Mason.”

Closing out the pre-Sabbath sets was Lamb of God, who delivered a crushing performance featuring “Laid to Rest” and “Redneck.” They fittingly concluded their set with a powerful rendition of Sabbath’s “Children of the Grave,” setting the stage for the main event.
