Switch 2 Joy-Con Teardown: A Peek Inside Nintendo's Latest Controller

The Nintendo Switch 2 has barely hit the shelves, and already, intrepid owners are diving headfirst into its innards. With the anticipation surrounding the new Joy-Cons and the lingering specter of “Joy-Con drift,” it’s no surprise that early adopters are eager to see what Nintendo has cooked up this time.

The Hall Effect Question: One of the biggest questions leading up to the Switch 2’s release centered on the type of analog sticks used. Many hoped Nintendo would finally adopt Hall Effect technology to mitigate the infamous drift issue that plagued its predecessor. However, Nintendo confirmed prior to launch that Hall Effect sticks would not be featured.

This hasn't stopped the community's curiosity. Images surfacing online, specifically from the r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit, reveal the inner workings of the new Joy-Cons. And the results are, perhaps unsurprisingly, familiar.

No Magnetic Magic: The images clearly show that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons lack the magnetic components associated with Hall Effect or TMR (Tunneling Magnetoresistive) sensors. Instead, the stick mechanisms appear very similar to those found in the original Switch Joy-Cons.

For comparison:

• Original Switch Joy-Con internals: These showed the design that ultimately led to widespread stick drift issues.

While this might seem disappointing to those hoping for a radical solution to drift, our own hands-on experience with the Switch 2 suggests a noticeable improvement. We remain optimistic that Nintendo has made significant internal modifications to address the persistent problem.

A Word of Caution (and Clothing): Let's be clear: disassembling your brand-new console isn't advisable. While curiosity is natural, it's best to let the experts handle the deep dives. Besides, let's try and keep those Joy-Cons clothed, shall we?
