Nintendo Switch 2: Early Review Thoughts From Our First Days With the Gaming System
The wait is finally over! After months of anticipation, the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially landed in stores and is making its way into the hands of eager gamers. It's time to dive in and share our initial impressions after spending the first few days "testing" this highly anticipated console.
Yesterday marked the official launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and the excitement is palpable. Reports are flooding in about successful retail pickups and the joy of unboxing those coveted pre-orders. A special shoutout to those who pre-ordered through Walmart, as they seemed to have hit the jackpot with early deliveries and bonus goodies – talk about starting your gaming experience right with snacks and drinks!
While many of us missed the initial pre-order window back in April, the good news is that finding the console in physical retail stores appears to be quite manageable. Let’s take a look at a quick recap of what we've learned so far:
- Retail Availability: Hitting the stores seems to be a winning strategy for acquiring a Switch 2 on launch day. Stock levels appear healthy, even for those without pre-orders.
- Online Availability: Online hunting is proving to be a bit more challenging, requiring more patience and persistence.
- Pre-Order Delivery Times: Delivery times for pre-ordered units have been varied, with some arriving promptly while others are still en route. Our own Aaron Souppouris humorously received his pre-ordered… controller, while his Switch 2 remains elusive!
Our senior reviewer, Sam Rutherford, has been diligently putting the Switch 2 through its paces, and here are some initial observations:
Display Performance:
- The Switch 2's display reaches a peak brightness of 450 nits with ambient brightness enabled, and 400 nits without.
- While comparatively dim for a device with HDR, the brightness can increase depending on the specific game being played.
Thermals and Dock Design:
- The device hasn't exhibited any significant overheating issues, thanks in part to the new dock's built-in fan.
- The dock itself is sleeker and feels more substantial than its predecessor.
- Interestingly, the new dock features only three USB ports, compared to the original Switch dock's four, although the console itself gains an extra port, partially compensating for this.
USB-C Limitations:
- The dock has just a single USB-C port, which is reserved for power.
- The remaining two ports are USB-A, potentially requiring adapters for USB-C accessories like the official Switch 2 camera.
- While you can plug accessories directly into the Switch 2, it's less convenient for frequent docking and undocking.
