Switch 2 Breaks the Internet (and Store Shelves)!

U.S. online stores put 'out of stock' signs as Nintendo Switch 2 sales hit record highs - CNBC

Nintendo Switch 2 Smashes Records, Leaving U.S. Stores Empty

The gaming world is buzzing! Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 has launched with a resounding success, exceeding all expectations and leaving many U.S. online stores struggling to keep up with the unprecedented demand. The hybrid console, which hit shelves on June 5th, has already sold over 3.5 million units in its first four days, signaling a new era for Nintendo and the gaming industry.

This phenomenal start marks Nintendo's first new console release in eight years and sets the stage for potentially achieving their ambitious goal of selling 15 million units by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026.

The launch has been nothing short of spectacular:

  • Record-Breaking Sales: 3.5 million units sold in just four days.
  • "Out of Stock" Signs: Major U.S. retailers have struggled to keep the console in stock online.
  • Enthusiastic Fans: Lines formed for hours at midnight releases at Nintendo stores worldwide.

Analysts are optimistic about the future of the Switch 2. Serkan Toto, CEO and founder of Kantan Games, stated, "The market expected a record from Nintendo, and as it turns out, Nintendo delivered." He further added, "All signals prior to launch pointed to significant demand, and I believe we will see further records broken over the next weeks or months."

Toto predicts the Switch 2 could sell over 20 million units in its first 12 months. David Gibson, senior research analyst at MST Financial, echoes this sentiment, projecting 20 million sales for the year ending March 2026.

Doug Bowser, President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming response, saying, "Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go."

Despite the positive momentum, Nintendo's Tokyo-listed shares experienced a slight dip of 3.5% on Wednesday. However, the company's stock has seen a remarkable rise of nearly fivefold since the original Switch debuted in early March 2017.

The question now is whether the Switch 2 can replicate the phenomenal success of its predecessor. The original Nintendo Switch sold 15 million units in its first year and went on to become the second-highest selling Nintendo device ever, with over 152 million units sold, only surpassed by the Nintendo DS.

The initial numbers and the overwhelmingly positive response from gamers suggest that the Switch 2 is well on its way to becoming another iconic console in Nintendo's history. The company has once again captured the hearts of gamers worldwide, and the future looks bright for the innovative gaming giant.
