In a tragic turn of events, a nighttime Russian drone attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky claimed the lives of at least five people, including a 1-year-old child, his mother, and grandmother. The devastating strike, which occurred shortly before dawn on Thursday, injured nine others and sent shockwaves through the nation.

The attack targeted a residential area, leaving behind a scene of devastation. Six drones slammed into homes, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak. According to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the infant victim was the grandson of the local fire chief, 50-year-old Oleksandr Lebid. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy poignantly noted that Chief Lebid “arrived to respond to the aftermath right at his own home.”

The brutality of the attack is further underscored by the identity of the child's mother, Daryna Shyhyda, a police officer. “Today our hearts are scorched by pain,” the National Police wrote on Telegram. “This is not just a loss — it is three generations of life uprooted.” Tragically, Shyhyda had recently moved with her son from Kyiv to her parents' home in Pryluky, fearing drone attacks in the capital. A neighbor, Liudmyla Horbunova, sadly recounted, “She ran away from Shaheds in Kyiv, but they found her here, in Pryluky.”

The scene left behind was one of unimaginable loss. Firefighters battled through charred debris, extinguishing the remnants of a fire that engulfed the family home, leaving behind only scattered toys, clothes, and a family photo book.

The timing of the attack is deeply unsettling. It came mere hours after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, Putin reportedly stated “very strongly” that Russia would retaliate for Ukraine’s recent drone attacks on Russian military airfields.

This incident is only one facet of a broader, widespread assault. Zelenskyy reported a total of 103 drones and one ballistic missile targeting multiple Ukrainian regions overnight, including Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, and Kherson. “This is another massive strike,” Zelenskyy declared, urging stronger international sanctions against Russia.

The ongoing conflict continues to inflict immense suffering. In Kharkiv, another Russian drone strike injured 19 people, including children, a pregnant woman, and a 93-year-old. The attacks also extended to Kherson, where glide bombs injured at least three. This relentless barrage of attacks underscores the urgent need for increased international support for Ukraine’s defense.

The situation is further complicated by stalled peace efforts. While Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to negotiate, Putin has shown no reciprocal interest. This lack of progress, coupled with the ongoing attacks, highlights the dire need for concerted international action to bring an end to the violence.

Even within Russia, the conflict’s impact is evident. An explosion damaged a railway line in the Voronezh region, forcing 26 trains to halt operations. This follows Putin's characterization of recent attacks on Russian infrastructure as “terrorist acts.”

The death of a 1-year-old child and his family serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of this devastating war. The international community must redouble its efforts to bring peace to Ukraine and hold those responsible for these horrific acts accountable.
