Downtown Los Angeles: Swift Crackdown Follows Protests

Wednesday evening saw heightened tensions in downtown Los Angeles. Hundreds of protesters marched from Pershing Square to City Hall, only to be met with a swift and forceful response from law enforcement.

Here’s a breakdown of the events:

• 6:20 p.m.: The first dispersal order of the night was issued.
• Unlawful Assembly: The LAPD, supported by L.A. County sheriff’s deputies, declared the gathering an unlawful assembly.
• Less-Lethal Munitions: Officers rushed the crowd, firing less-lethal munitions, causing widespread scattering.
• Mounted Police: Police on horseback charged into the crowd, resulting in several demonstrators falling to the ground.
• Containment: Hundreds of protesters were pushed into Gloria Molina Grand Park, where they chanted, “Shame.”

The impact on local businesses and residents has been significant. Saul Barnes, whose family owns a hotel downtown, expressed his frustration: "It’s very disruptive to day-to-day life." He also highlighted the fear among hotel workers, many of whom are Mexican, due to ICE raids and the destruction caused by the protests.

"The raids, the protest — everything is destroyed," Barnes lamented. "Who the hell wants to work in a state like this?"

Boyle Heights: A Peaceful Protest Against Immigration Enforcement

In stark contrast to the scene downtown, Boyle Heights hosted a demonstrably different protest. Around 100 demonstrators gathered at Salazar Park, passionately condemning federal immigration enforcement in Los Angeles through music, dance, and chants.

Matthew Hunter, a participant in previous Centro CSO demonstrations, emphasized the community's heightened awareness since President Trump’s election. "Trump is obviously increasing the fascist pressure on these communities," Hunter stated.

The demonstration often resembled a celebration, with participants carrying signs reading "ICE out of LA" and "We’re all here illegally." Cars passing by honked in support, adding to the positive atmosphere.

Julieta Cruz, a demonstrator, captured the spirit of the event: "I think it’s very beautiful that everybody’s getting together. This is people’s getaway here in Boyle Heights, East L.A. … We feel comfortable here."

Verica Topete, an organizer with Centro CSO, highlighted the importance of showing solidarity. "All eyes are on Los Angeles right now. A lot of our family members and friends, some of them are still undocumented. … it’s really important for us to show our community that they’re not alone."
