Tragedy in San Antonio: 'King of the Hill' Actor Jonathan Joss Killed; Suspect Confesses

The entertainment world and the San Antonio community are in mourning following the tragic death of Jonathan Joss, best known as the voice of John Redcorn in the animated hit series, 'King of the Hill.' Joss, 59, was fatally shot on Sunday, and the suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, is in custody after allegedly confessing to the crime.

According to a police report obtained by The Independent, the incident occurred as Joss was picking up mail at his former residence in San Antonio, Texas. Ceja reportedly drove up behind Joss's car, leading to an argument. An unidentified witness, who was traveling with Joss, told police she overheard Ceja threaten he had a gun before the shooting took place.

"I shot him," Ceja reportedly told police upon being detained at the scene, according to the police report. A rifle was confiscated from Ceja, and he has been charged with first-degree felony murder. His bond has been set at $200,000, and his first court appearance is scheduled for August.

Key details of the incident:

  • Victim: Jonathan Joss, 59, renowned voice actor.
  • Suspect: Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja, now in custody.
  • Charge: First-degree felony murder.
  • Confession: Ceja allegedly confessed to the shooting upon arrest.
  • Bond: $200,000

While authorities have not yet released a motive, Joss's husband, Tristian Kern de Gonzales, has publicly stated his belief that the shooting was a homophobic hate crime, citing years of harassment and a previous arson attack on their home. Gonzales stated on Facebook that their home was burned down in February, tragically killing their three dogs. He claims they returned to the property to collect mail, including a victim's fire fund check, and were confronted by a man who allegedly yelled homophobic slurs before opening fire.

According to Gonzales, "When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw,”

"That’s when, according to Gonzales, a man approached them and “started yelling homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.”

“Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,” Gonzales continued.

However, the San Antonio Police Department has released a statement indicating that their investigation has not yet found evidence to support the claim that the murder was motivated by Joss's sexual orientation. "SAPD investigators handle these allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, the suspect will be charged accordingly," the department stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Joss's career spanned decades, with notable roles including Chief Ken Hotate on 'Parks and Recreation,' as well as appearances in 'Tulsa King,' 'Ray Donovan,' 'True Grit,' and 'The Magnificent Seven.' He took over the role of John Redcorn on 'King of the Hill' from Victor Aaron and was reportedly involved in recording for the show's upcoming reboot on Hulu, slated to premiere in August.

The investigation is ongoing, and the San Antonio community, along with fans of Jonathan Joss's work, await further details as the case unfolds. The loss of such a talented and beloved actor is a profound tragedy, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
