Japan's ispace Aims for Historic Lunar Touchdown in the Moon's Far North
In a significant leap for commercial space exploration, a private Japanese lunar lander is on the verge of making history. ispace, a Tokyo-based company, is attempting a touchdown in the unexplored far north of the moon, carrying with it a mini-rover named Tenacious. This ambitious mission, dubbed "Resilience," represents the latest chapter in the rapidly expanding commercial lunar race.
This attempt marks a poignant comeback for ispace. Their previous moonshot two years ago ended in a crash landing, a setback that fueled the determination behind this current mission. The Resilience lander carries a payload that includes not only the Tenacious rover, equipped with a shovel to collect lunar soil samples for NASA, but also a charming artistic addition: a miniature Swedish-style red house, designed by artist Mikael Genberg, affectionately nicknamed the "Moonhouse."
The Commercial Lunar Rush: The moon, once solely the domain of government-funded space agencies, has become a hotbed of private enterprise since 2019. While the journey has been punctuated by more failures than successes, the Resilience mission underscores the growing ambition and technological progress within the commercial space sector.
Resilience's Journey: Launched in January from Florida, Resilience embarked on a lengthy, indirect journey to the moon. It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which successfully landed on the moon in March, becoming the first private entity to achieve this feat. However, another U.S. company, Intuitive Machines, experienced a setback when its lander crash-landed shortly after its arrival.
Targeting the Moon's North: Unlike previous attempts focused on the challenging lunar south pole, Resilience is targeting the relatively gentler terrain of the moon's far north. The ispace team meticulously selected a flat area with minimal boulders in Mare Frigoris (Sea of Cold), a region rich in craters and ancient lava flows.
Post-Landing Expectations: Once the lander successfully settles and establishes communication, it is expected to transmit images back to Earth, possibly several hours after touchdown. The deployment of the Tenacious rover onto the lunar surface is anticipated sometime over the weekend.
Tenacious: A Miniature Lunar Explorer: Constructed from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, the 11-pound (5 kg) Tenacious rover is equipped with:
- A high-definition camera for surveying the lunar landscape.
- A shovel to collect lunar regolith samples for NASA's research purposes.
The rover's mobility is limited, moving at a crawl of less than one inch per second, but is capable of venturing up to two-thirds of a mile (1 kilometer) from the lander. It’s designed to operate throughout the lunar day (approximately two weeks).
Beyond Science: An Artistic Touch: Adding a unique artistic element to the mission is the inclusion of the Moonhouse, a testament to the expanding scope of lunar exploration beyond pure scientific endeavors.
ispace's Vision: Takeshi Hakamada, CEO and founder of ispace, views this mission as a stepping stone towards larger ambitions, with plans for a significantly larger lander launching by 2027 in collaboration with NASA. Jeremy Fix, chief engineer for ispace’s U.S. subsidiary, emphasized that the company is focused on building the market, not solely dominating it.
The Future of Lunar Exploration: The race to the moon continues with other companies like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Astrobotic Technology aiming for landings by the end of the year. This renewed interest marks a significant shift in lunar exploration, with both private and government entities pursuing ambitious goals. NASA itself plans to send astronauts around the moon next year, followed by a crewed lunar landing within the next few years. China also has ambitious lunar landing plans for its astronauts by 2030.
