Greta Thunberg Joins Aid Ship Sailing to Gaza, Aiming to Break Israeli Blockade

In a bold move, climate activist Greta Thunberg has joined a group of activists aboard the ship Madleen, setting sail for Gaza with the goal of "breaking Israel's siege" of the territory. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the activist group operating the vessel, announced the departure from Catania, Sicily, on Sunday.

The mission intends to deliver humanitarian aid and raise international awareness about the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Before departing, Thunberg addressed a press conference, expressing her unwavering commitment. "We are doing this because, no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying," she said, visibly moved. "Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity. And, no matter how dangerous this mission is, it’s not even near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the livestreamed genocide."

Israel has vehemently rejected allegations of genocide.

The situation in Gaza remains dire. While Israel slightly eased its blockade in mid-May, allowing limited humanitarian aid, experts warn that Gaza is at risk of famine without significantly increased assistance. UN agencies and major aid groups cite Israeli restrictions, law and order breakdowns, and widespread looting as major obstacles to delivering aid to Gaza's roughly 2 million residents.

The Madleen's crew includes notable figures such as:

  • Greta Thunberg, the internationally renowned climate activist.
  • Liam Cunningham, the actor known for his role in Game of Thrones.
  • Rima Hassan, a French member of the European parliament of Palestinian descent, who is barred from entering Israel due to her opposition to the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The activists anticipate a seven-day journey to reach Gaza, assuming they are not intercepted. This is not Thunberg's first attempt to reach Gaza by sea. An earlier effort in May was thwarted when another Freedom Flotilla ship, the Conscience, was allegedly attacked by drones in international waters off Malta. The group attributed the attack, which damaged the ship, to Israel.

Thiago Ávila, another activist involved, emphasized the broader strategy behind the mission. "We are breaking the siege of Gaza by sea, but that’s part of a broader strategy of mobilisations that will also attempt to break the siege by land," he stated. He mentioned the Global March to Gaza, an international initiative planning to reach the Rafah crossing in mid-June to protest and demand an end to the Gaza offensive and the reopening of the border.

This voyage underscores the persistent efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and challenge the ongoing blockade. Whether the Madleen succeeds in its mission remains to be seen, but its symbolic importance in raising awareness and galvanizing action is undeniable.
