GirlsDoPorn Boss, Once One of FBI’s 10 Most Wanted, Pleads Guilty to Sex Trafficking
After years evading justice, including a stint on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, Michael James Pratt, the mastermind behind the notorious GirlsDoPorn website, has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in San Diego.
Pratt's guilty plea marks a significant development in a case that has exposed the dark underbelly of the adult entertainment industry and the devastating impact of exploitation on vulnerable young women. He faces a potential life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for September 25th.
The Scheme: Luring Victims with False Promises
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Pratt employed a calculated scheme of force, fraud, and coercion to recruit hundreds of women, many in their late teens, into performing sex acts on camera. The victims were often enticed with the promise of legitimate modeling gigs, only to be manipulated into filming adult videos.
Prosecutors revealed that Pratt and his associates falsely assured the women that the videos would never be released online. However, when the women hesitated or refused to continue filming, Pratt resorted to threats, including:
- Threatening to sue them
- Canceling their flights home
- Threatening to publicly release the videos
Profiting from Exploitation
The videos were subsequently uploaded to GirlsDoPorn.com, generating over $17 million in profits for Pratt between 2012 and 2019, according to prosecutors.
Devastating Consequences for Victims
The impact on the victims has been profound and long-lasting. During court hearings, victims recounted harrowing experiences, detailing how the exploitation led to:
- Loss of jobs
- Eviction from their homes
- Forced withdrawal from school
- Estrangement from friends and family
- Suicide attempts
Years on the Run and a Global Manhunt
Pratt's legal troubles began with an indictment in October 2019, alongside his business partners. However, he fled the country before he could be held accountable. His escape led to a global manhunt, with the FBI placing him on their Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
After years on the run, authorities finally apprehended Pratt in Spain in December 2022. He was held in custody until his extradition to San Diego in 2024.
Co-conspirators Already Sentenced
Pratt's former business partners, Ruben Andre Garcia, Matthew Wolfe, and Theodore Gyi, have already been convicted and are serving sentences of 20, 14, and four years, respectively. Valorie Moser, the former GirlsDoPorn bookkeeper, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and awaits sentencing in September.
Pratt's Admission and the Road Ahead
In court, Pratt admitted to conceiving the idea for GirlsDoPorn, recruiting women for the videos, and even participating in the production process by transporting them and operating the camera, according to prosecutors.
Pratt pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sex-traffic from 2012 to 2019 and one count of sex trafficking a victim in May 2012.
The guilty plea of Michael Pratt brings a measure of closure to the victims of this heinous sex trafficking scheme and serves as a stark reminder that those who exploit and abuse others for profit will ultimately be held accountable. While the scars of the past may never fully heal, this verdict offers a glimmer of hope for justice and a step towards preventing such atrocities from happening again.
