Images and Eyewitness Accounts Emerge from Tehran's Evin Prison After Alleged Israeli Strike
On June 23, 2025, a wave of reports flooded in regarding an explosion at the notorious Evin Prison, located in northern Tehran. Eyewitness accounts and emerging images paint a stark picture of the aftermath, following what has been alleged as an Israeli airstrike. The prison is infamous as the primary detention center for political dissidents under the Islamic regime, making this incident particularly sensitive and alarming.
The reports surfaced around 1:30 PM local time, sending ripples of concern throughout international communities.
Gideon Saar, Israel's Foreign Minister, amplified the situation by sharing a video on social media, purportedly showing a missile striking a prison door. While Saar refrained from explicitly stating the video's source, its authenticity was seemingly corroborated by other images filtering out of Tehran.
Iranian media outlets report that the attack's impact extended beyond the prison's main entrance. Damages were also inflicted on a prosecutor's office and two courts within the Evin complex. Specifically, these included:
- "Kachouyi" court in the northern part of the complex.
- "Moghaddasi" court in the southern part.
These courts are notoriously known for prosecuting protesters and dissidents. Evin Prison itself is infamous for housing thousands of Iranians, including:
- Protesters from the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement.
- University students.
- Women activists.
- Opposition figures.
- Artists.
The sheer force of the explosions is said to have shattered windows in sections 7 and 8 of the prison's north wing.
Further fueling the controversy, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz characterized the alleged attack as part of an "unprecedented wave of strikes targeting key components of the Iranian regime, including internal repression facilities in the heart of the capital."
Eyewitness accounts from within the prison further illustrate the dire situation.
Abolfazl Ghadyani, a well-known critic of the Islamic regime currently incarcerated in Evin, described the devastation in a phone call with his son: "All the windows are shattered, and the prison hospital is partially damaged." His son, Ahmad Ghadyani, voiced profound concern, questioning the regime's intentions regarding the political prisoners, many of whom are ill.
Adding to the distress, a former political prisoner with established connections inside Evin reported severe damage to the women's ward, although thankfully, no serious injuries to prisoners were reported in that area.
Beyond Evin Prison, reports also indicate that alleged Israeli jets targeted other regime-affiliated installations in Tehran, including:
- The Basij headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
- Internal security command centers.
- The symbolic “Countdown to Israel’s Destruction” clock in Palestine Square.
The timing of these strikes is particularly noteworthy, occurring just hours after US President Donald Trump hinted at potential regime change in Iran, stating, "It’s not politically correct to use the term ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian regime cannot MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a regime change??? MIGA!!!"
The alleged airstrike on Evin Prison represents a significant escalation in an already tense geopolitical landscape. The implications, both for the political prisoners held within its walls and the broader regional stability, remain to be seen. The coming days will be crucial in understanding the full extent of the damage and the potential repercussions of this event.
