Israel Authorizes New West Bank Settlements Amid Gaza Devastation

The geopolitical landscape in the Middle East continues to shift dramatically as Israel announces plans to establish 22 new Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. This move, revealed on Thursday, includes the legalization of existing outposts built without official government approval. Simultaneously, Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip have reportedly claimed the lives of at least 34 people, according to local health officials. The situation paints a grim picture of escalating tensions and deepening divisions.

A Contentious Territory

The West Bank, along with Gaza and East Jerusalem, has been under Israeli occupation since the 1967 Mideast war. Palestinians envision these territories as integral to their future state. However, the expansion of Israeli settlements in these areas is a major point of contention. Most of the international community considers these settlements illegal under international law and a significant obstacle to a peaceful resolution of the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Defense Minister Israel Katz defended the settlement decision, stating that it "strengthens our hold on Judea and Samaria," using the biblical term for the West Bank. He further added that it "anchors our historical right in the Land of Israel and constitutes a crushing response to Palestinian terrorism." Katz also asserted that settlement construction is a "strategic move that prevents the establishment of a Palestinian state that would endanger Israel."

Watchdog Alarms and Expansion Details

Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement watchdog group, has labeled this announcement as the most extensive expansion of its kind since the 1993 Oslo accords. The group warns that these settlements, located deep within the West Bank, will "dramatically reshape the West Bank and entrench the occupation even further."

Currently, over 100 settlements already exist across the West Bank, housing approximately 500,000 settlers. These settlements vary in size and scope, ranging from small hilltop outposts to fully developed communities complete with infrastructure and amenities.

Peace Now detailed the plans, stating that they involve:

• Authorization of 12 existing outposts.
• Development of nine new settlements.
• Reclassification of a neighborhood within an existing settlement as a separate entity.

The watchdog group criticized the government's actions, stating, "The government is making clear – again and without restraint – that it prefers deepening the occupation and advancing de facto annexation over pursuing peace."

Diminishing Prospects for Peace

The accelerated pace of settlement construction in recent years, even before the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, has confined Palestinians to increasingly smaller areas within the West Bank. This trend is making the establishment of a viable, independent Palestinian state an increasingly remote prospect.

While former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration adopted a more lenient stance towards Israeli settlement claims, President Joe Biden, like many of his predecessors, has voiced opposition to the settlements but has exerted limited pressure on Israel to curb their growth. The top United Nations court ruled last year that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is unlawful and called on it to end, and for settlement construction to stop immediately.

Gaza Under Fire

Concurrently, the situation in Gaza remains dire. An Israeli airstrike on a house in Bureij, a refugee camp, resulted in the deaths of 22 people, including nine women and children. Separate strikes in northern Gaza claimed the lives of another 12 individuals.

While the Israeli military claims to target only militants and attributes civilian casualties to Hamas operating within populated areas, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the ongoing conflict.

The Gaza conflict was triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages. As of now, Hamas still holds 58 hostages, with efforts to secure their release ongoing.

The intertwined issues of settlement expansion and ongoing violence present formidable challenges to any hope for a lasting peace.
