Measles Exposure Alert: Children's Hospital Colorado and Aurora Stores Affected After 6th Case Confirmed

Colorado health officials are on alert following confirmation of the state's sixth measles case this year, the highest number seen since at least 1996. A child infected with measles recently visited Children's Hospital Colorado and several stores in Aurora, potentially exposing other individuals, particularly those who are unvaccinated, to this highly contagious disease.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) urges anyone who visited the following locations during the specified times to be vigilant for measles symptoms until June 17:

  • Children’s Hospital Colorado Emergency Department: May 22, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; May 27, 1:10 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.; or May 27, 9:25 p.m. to May 28, 4:15 a.m.
  • Walgreens (18461 E. Hampden Ave.): May 24, 10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.; May 26, 10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m.
  • Sam’s Club (880 S. Abilene St.): May 26, noon to 3:30 p.m.
  • Natural Grocers (3440 S. Tower Road): May 26, 6 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.

What are the Symptoms?

Measles typically begins with:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes

A characteristic rash usually appears on the face about four days after the initial symptoms begin, marking the point when the infected individual becomes contagious.

If you suspect exposure and develop symptoms:

It is crucial to call your healthcare provider before visiting their office or an emergency room. This allows medical professionals to take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.

Vaccination is Key

The measles vaccine is highly effective. Two doses provide approximately 97% protection against the disease. For unvaccinated individuals who have been exposed, receiving the vaccine within 72 hours of exposure may prevent infection.

Special Vaccination Clinics Available

Adams and Arapahoe counties are offering special measles vaccination clinics on Thursday for those who may have been exposed:

  • 1401 W. 122nd Ave. #200, Westminster: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Altura Plaza, 15400 E. 14th Place, Aurora: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Details of the Current Case

The child, who is under 5 years old and unvaccinated, is currently hospitalized at Children's Hospital Colorado receiving treatment. Hospital staff have implemented measures to prevent further exposure to other patients. State health officials confirmed the child recently traveled with family to "multiple international locations with increased measles cases."

While most children recover from measles without complications, it's important to note that some can develop serious issues such as dehydration, pneumonia, or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). The mortality rate is estimated to be between one and three out of every 1,000 people infected.

Vaccination Rates in Colorado

While approximately 94% of Colorado school children are up-to-date on their measles vaccinations, some areas of the state have significantly lower rates, increasing the risk of outbreaks.

Colorado's rise in measles cases underscores the critical importance of vaccination in protecting our communities, especially our most vulnerable members. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and talk to your healthcare provider about ensuring you and your family are fully protected.
