The Solution to Today's Strands
Here are the answers to the Strands puzzle for May 30, 2025:
- Spangram: SOCCER
- Theme Words:
- STRIKER
- GOALKEEPER
- MIDFIELDER
- DEFENDER
- FORWARD
How I Solved Today's Strands
Initially, the phrase "here's the kicker" made me think of punchlines and jokes. However, I realized it could be more literal, pointing towards the sport of soccer.
Seeing "FIELD" and "FIELDER" initially threw me off, but then STRIKER in the upper right corner caught my eye. I knew that was a soccer position! Then, the spangram SOCCER became apparent.
From there, it was a matter of finding the other positions: FORWARD in the bottom right, DEFENDER in the bottom left, GOALKEEPER bordering the spangram, and finally, MIDFIELDER.
How to Play Strands
Strands is available on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app. The game presents you with a board of letters and a clue hinting at the theme. Your goal is to find the hidden words related to the theme.
- The Spangram: This word explicitly states the puzzle's theme and spans the entire board (either left to right or top to bottom). It is highlighted in yellow.
- Theme Words: These words reflect the puzzle's theme and can travel in any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonal). Each letter is used only once. Correctly identified theme words are highlighted in blue.
- Hints: Submit non-theme words (four letters or more) to earn hints. After three incorrect submissions, a hint will highlight the letters of one of the theme words.
How to Win Strands
Unlike some other NYT games, you can't fail at Strands! There's no limit to guesses or time. You win when you've correctly identified the spangram and all the theme words, using every letter on the board.
Upon solving the puzzle, you'll receive a shareable card indicating your performance with blue dots (🔵 for theme words) and a yellow dot (🟡 for the spangram). A lightbulb (💡) indicates hints used.
